Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s caste bias exposed: shades all characters in 42 movies with caste hierarchy

Pic1 Hrishikesh Mukherjee Saga untold: 99% character names are Upper Caste.

A renowned Indian film director Hrishikesh Mukherjee is named as a pioneer of the ‘middle cinema’ of India. He was also known for his simple and social films. Ironically, Mr. Mukherjee’s middle cinema which represents the middle class ethos, simple mentality mostly drafted an upper class impact on audience. Middle class families has outlined with the silver layer of Brahmin names and upper class lifestyle. Each movie has depicted a high living of middle class family, refined attitude of characters, sophisticated sources of revenue and so do the noble names of characters.

No doubt the scripts were well skilled and cultured even the sound and techniques, cinematography entire was remarkable; are still in the heart of India like ‘Anand’, who died but still immortal. Yet, a certain trend was established by director and so do the writers representing a main character of cinemas for middle class families with upper class names. If one representing a farmer, servant, maid director gives only names like Raghu, Hariprasd, Jai Singh, Raju, didi etc. but not a title.  Analysis showed a main character with the title Tripathi, Roy, Sharma, Chaturvedi, Abhyankar, Kriplani, Kulkarni and so on picked up by directors. These are not a single incident happened in 60s or 70s, its repeatedly go on and grow through the decades till date plant via each and every character’s name of the Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s movies.

A common man of 60s and 70s, who might be knew little about an importance of education and sophisticated living were dreamt to have a larger than life living style as shown in Mukherjee’s movies, which was not affordable for him.  A common man whose first priority was family was completely fascinated, magnetized by the Mukherjee’s ‘upper class plant surrounding’, thinking to earn money, sometimes feeling guilty about own names and that was a fact. Why not director used other titles to get hits?

What does this segregation of names reflects? However, this titles segregation system created a long lasting impact on the Indian mind.
